challenge
Assessing student writing in the age of generative tools
A university lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities at Chiang Mai University needed a clear, defensible framework for assessing written work when generative AI tools were available to students.
through the programme
Through the AI for Educators Cohort, she developed a revised assessment rubric that focused on demonstration of specific knowledge and reasoning process, rather than finished prose alone. Her practical project involved piloting the rubric with one semester group.
outcome
The rubric was adopted across the department for the following academic year. She has since presented the approach at a regional education conference in Bangkok.

challenge
Surface defect detection on a small production run
A small ceramics workshop in Lamphun was manually checking glazed pieces for surface defects — a slow process that still missed a meaningful proportion of faults before packing.
through the programme
Through the Applied Vision Systems Programme, the workshop owner built a small vision-based inspection tool using hardware already available on-site. The programme covered annotation, model selection, evaluation against real production conditions, and deployment to a Raspberry Pi-class device.
outcome
The tool now runs continuously during packing shifts. It does not catch everything, and the owner is clear about its limits — but it has reduced the number of defective pieces shipped to around a third of the previous rate.

challenge
Building a training dataset from scratch
A research assistant at Chiang Mai University had been asked to support a project involving image classification on a dataset that did not yet exist — she needed to understand annotation, quality control, and the relationship between dataset quality and model behaviour.
through the programme
The Computer Vision Track gave her the systematic grounding she needed. Her applied project involved creating and annotating a small dataset, training a baseline model, and documenting the annotation decisions that most affected model performance.
outcome
The annotation guide she produced during the programme became the starting point for the research project's data collection protocol. She subsequently took on responsibility for the project's data pipeline.
